Oulton Park - Two second places to clinch second in championship

The final two championship rounds are already upon us. Oulton Park is quite possibly my favourite UK circuit and we'll be using the full International layout for the first time. The parkland setting looks glorious in the August sunshine but I wouldn't have minded at least one wet race this year!

Sharing a pit garage with Mike Dugdale, who is keen to get out early for qualifying, means that I ended up first in the queue at the end of the pitlane. Rob Smith, the new champion, is behind me. The last time this happened, he followed me around Castle Combe and pipped me to pole by less than a tenth. As the session gets underway I nail it from the off and try to shake Rob off for some isolated laps. The loud clunking from the rear end is a little unnerving for the first few corners before I realise that I've left my son's pushchair in the boot! Putting that to one side and knowing that my tyres will be at their best on lap 2 or 3, getting up to speed quickly is important. I can't lose Rob but nor does he come past me, despite appearing to be a little quicker. Ultimately he goes a tenth quicker to clinch another pole but second is good enough for me and guarantees a front row start in both races.

Car for sale!!!

Fancy taking over from here? I'm putting the car up for sale at the end of August after the double header at Pembrey. As such, it will be available for the last two rounds of the championship at Snetterton in September.

Class win in Elise sprinting at Lydden Hill

It's such an intense experience... waiting for the lights... standing start... wheelspin.... unknown corners... blur, blur, blur... Paddock Bend... oversteer... gravel trap... timing beam

Elise at Devils Elbow

Dead chuffed at how competitive the Elise was compared to the other classes, especially the Caterhams. My silverware is proud of place on the mantlepiece - I'm surprised and delighted with 1st in class with a run of the 1.75-lap sprint circuit of 86.57 seconds. It was great to actually take part and then still have time to watch the racing in the afternoon.

Bought car

Sold for £510 (I'm crap at haggling).

Actually it drove really well. Got oversteer turning right out the forecourt as the black tyre goo struggled for traction. Performance was better than I was expecting - not earth shattering but respectable I thought.

Pulled away nicely from a few standing starts, brakes worked OK and locked the front wheels quite easily. Tracked straight enough and went round corners quite happily. The steering felt pretty vague but I reckon it will do the job.

Pick it up tomorrow after work once they put the passenger door window back on its runners. It's got a bunch of MOT certs and receipts. Looks like it's had some sort of engine rebuild (new followers) at some point and the cam belt was changed at 75k.

Looking forward to tearing the insides out now...

Found car

A 1989 G-reg 318i coupe with 124k miles. Advertised locally for £595. Hoping to haggle on the drivers seat that's ripped to shreds, knackered dampers and scored brake discs :)
